{found} — pretty little thieves

I met Nancy, the lovely girl behind prettylittlethieves.com, at the Renegade Craft Fair last year. I instantly fell in love with her amazing illustrations. I picked up her 2011 calendar at the show and have hung it right by my desk so I get to enjoy it while working. She has a lot of her creations listed in her etsy shopwhich I check regularly. One piece caught my eye and instantly became a favorite, and I stewed over it for a while. Once she posted a print to help support the relief efforts in Japan, I knew I wanted to help out… and since I was ordering one piece I figured, what the heck I’ll get the other one too :)

Within only a couple of days, this super cute package arrived in my mailbox. It was so fun, I couldn’t even open it without taking some pictures first… the little details are what I love and try to add in my own work. That’s what makes things special. Well, she nailed it! From the custom stamp on the label, the fun recycled magazine wrapping paper, the personalized name sticker that securely held the black string, to the perfect teal green tape holding it all together. It was a pure joy to open, and to top it off you still got to uncover the beautiful illustrations inside! (And, maybe find a surprise!)

If you haven’t already seen her work, definitely check out her site, you’ll fall in love.

event — unique LA

Two weekends ago (has it really been that long?) we made our way to Downtown LA for what is easily my new favorite independent design show — Unique LA. I’ve been to quite a few art/craft shows in the past, but this event is a designers dream! From the second you step onto the floor, the inspiration just flows right through you. There were over 300 booths with all types of artists and homemade work to enjoy; fashion design, illustrative posters, letterpress cards, pottery, screen printing, jewelry, photography, and the list goes on and on. There was even a delicious café area to satisfy your taste buds and free beverages to quench your thirst.

Everyone that attended got these sweet designed tote bags, photographed above, to carry all our loot in… and they made good keepsakes from the show. Also, photographed are some of the business cards and goodies picked up from the artists, everything was designed so fun!

It was really nice to see so many local artist showing off and sharing what they love, you could really feel the joy and intensity at every booth. I could have stayed there forever, that great vibe is hard to come by and with me working from home right now, the chance to get out there and interact with fellow creatives was fantastic.

I came home wanting to make a zillion things! The creative ideas are flowing like crazy and it feels great to have that kind of excitement again. We didn’t leave the show with only inspiration though, we both found quite a few items we fell in love with.

A few things we snatched up were:
A cute necklace by a charming photographer, Stacey Winters.
Some unique zines from False Start.
A couple fun illustrated posters from The Poster List.
Pretty earnings from S.W.A.K. By Sarah
Super soft t-shirt at New Clothingwear
A kickass screen printed scarf from who knows who… can’t remember, sorry!
Snuggliest hoodie ever from Urban Octopus.

There were a lot of things we saw but didn’t get (can’t buy everything :)) and shops we loved that deserve a mention:
Cool letterpress work by LuLu Dee
Very unique jewelry that is etched wood by Molly M Designs.
Sweet Illustrations at DKNG
Shop with attitude - Punk Masters.
Unconventional cupcakes (that look amazing) at the Burlesque Bakery

We learned this show happens twice a year, so make sure to get out to the December holiday show and I’ll hopefully see you there! Who knows I might even have a booth! Find more information at Unique LA.
