design — sketchbook project.

Stumbled upon this great idea, people from around the world buy the same sketchbook from the sketchbook project site and fill it up with their own creations and send it back. They catalog all the books and send them on tour around the country for all to see. I love the idea of being apart of all that creativeness and seeing how each individual interprets the project. So cool… check it out for your self and who knows it might just be the summer project you were looking for.

event — unique LA

Two weekends ago (has it really been that long?) we made our way to Downtown LA for what is easily my new favorite independent design show — Unique LA. I’ve been to quite a few art/craft shows in the past, but this event is a designers dream! From the second you step onto the floor, the inspiration just flows right through you. There were over 300 booths with all types of artists and homemade work to enjoy; fashion design, illustrative posters, letterpress cards, pottery, screen printing, jewelry, photography, and the list goes on and on. There was even a delicious café area to satisfy your taste buds and free beverages to quench your thirst.

Everyone that attended got these sweet designed tote bags, photographed above, to carry all our loot in… and they made good keepsakes from the show. Also, photographed are some of the business cards and goodies picked up from the artists, everything was designed so fun!

It was really nice to see so many local artist showing off and sharing what they love, you could really feel the joy and intensity at every booth. I could have stayed there forever, that great vibe is hard to come by and with me working from home right now, the chance to get out there and interact with fellow creatives was fantastic.

I came home wanting to make a zillion things! The creative ideas are flowing like crazy and it feels great to have that kind of excitement again. We didn’t leave the show with only inspiration though, we both found quite a few items we fell in love with.

A few things we snatched up were:
A cute necklace by a charming photographer, Stacey Winters.
Some unique zines from False Start.
A couple fun illustrated posters from The Poster List.
Pretty earnings from S.W.A.K. By Sarah
Super soft t-shirt at New Clothingwear
A kickass screen printed scarf from who knows who… can’t remember, sorry!
Snuggliest hoodie ever from Urban Octopus.

There were a lot of things we saw but didn’t get (can’t buy everything :)) and shops we loved that deserve a mention:
Cool letterpress work by LuLu Dee
Very unique jewelry that is etched wood by Molly M Designs.
Sweet Illustrations at DKNG
Shop with attitude - Punk Masters.
Unconventional cupcakes (that look amazing) at the Burlesque Bakery

We learned this show happens twice a year, so make sure to get out to the December holiday show and I’ll hopefully see you there! Who knows I might even have a booth! Find more information at Unique LA.
